Appearing on TV with a bruised face and a gash to his cheek, ousted State Minister Ted Young says he was assaulted by a senior army officer when he was called at the military camp Monday.

Young says the military was concerned about a press release he authorised on behalf of the Soqosoqo Duavata ni Lewenivanua  (SDL) party stating the military lacked discipline.  Young is the acting national director for SDL.

He said he went voluntarily to the camp because he didn't want to be arrested in front of his family by the military.

Army spokesman Major Neumi Leweni said if Young has a complaint he should file it with the Fiji Human Rights Commission.

Meanwhile, the head of the Women’s Crisis Centre, Shamima Ali, says the detentions at the camp must be stopped. She added people are entitled to have public debates as long as they don’t infringe on other people’s rights.
