The official launch of Earth Hour by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) was held in
Bali today. The campaign will require cities, communities, individuals and businesses to turn off their lights for an hour in an effort to contribute positively to reducing pollution.
Suva, the capital of Fiji,
has joined the city-based campaign which also includes
Chicago,
Auckland, Tel Aviv,
Copenhagen,
Manila, and
Sydney,
Australia, where the event started last year.
Fiji’s Earth Hour campaign is expected to begin sometime next month.
The
inaugural Earth Hour took place in
Sydney,
Australia in March this year with more than 2.2 million people participated. It resulted in a ten per cent drop in energy usage double what had been predicted.
