The quake was reported about 110 miles S.W. of Arawa.

According to various geological authorities, the quake was centred about 110 miles South-West of the town of Arawa under the Solomon Sea.   Reports vary on the depth below ground of the epicenter.

On April 2^nd.   an earthquake measuring   8.1 on the Richter scale hit near the island of Gizo in Solomon Islands causing extensive damage to the town of Gizo landing and the loss of 52 lives.
