According to the U.S. Geological survey, the earthquake registered 6.7 on the Richter scale, it’s epicentre about two kilometers underground and 75 km West of the capital of Honiara on
Guadalcanal island
No tsunami alert was issued, although the Pacific Tsunami centre did caution that coastlines within 100 km might be at risk from high waves.
An earthquake with a magnitude of 8.1 struck the Solonoms near Gizo on April 2nd.
There was widespread damage to the small
port of
Gizo Landing and to the coastline villages of nearby islands. More than fifty lives were lost.
