Sogavare says the frequency of military coups in Fiji challenges the workings of the important pillars that bind the Commonwealth together, and he is a strong believer in democracy. He also noted it is not logical for Fiji to capitalize on unavoidable violations by way of military coups as a means to return the country to normal.
But the Solomons PM said first, other regional countries must understand the problems which face Fiji, the most developed of the Pacific Island nations. He said they can not help if the region is bogged down with theories of good governance and democracy without practical understanding of the uniqueness of Fiji’s situation .
He said Fiji needs a good dose of understanding and respect from regional countries and the Commonwealth.
