PNG joined chorus of strong protest in
Bali which ultimately led to the
United States making a u-turn and joining the consensus on a 2009 deadline for a landmark treaty to fight global warming.
A strong speech delivered by PNG’s Prime Minister Somare on Wednesday criticised the refusal of major industrial nations to participate.
Senior U-S negotiator Paula Dobriansky had earlier said she would object to the draft proposal on tackling climate change. Her comments prompted loud boos from other delegations exhausted after the 12-days of
talks in
Bali
Later, Dobriansky drew loud cheers from the when she took the microphone and announced that
Washington would “go forward and join consensus”.
